Poll #24: Prot. Human or alien and why?

*Votes may have movie and book spoilers*
Here we go   …

Alien – 460 single votes plus votes with explanations.
Human – 141 single votes plus votes with explanations.
Both the alien and human – 19 single votes plus votes with explanations.

In addition, If I wasn’t so lazy, I’d add all the votes listed below to the totals:

I think he was an alien. i know! but i dont know

I think he was an alien. Because every human is an angel of yourself.

I think he was an alien. There is simply no way he can change his eye sensitivity, heart rate and prone ness to medicine just because he is blocking something terrible out his mind. the human eye can not see ultra violet light there is no explanation. What he knows about the stars is known by 4 or 5 people in the world he could not have known about that unless he somehow had access to the hubble telescope as you can’t even se it from earth. He Physically CAN’T BE HUMAN.

I think he was an alien. I believe it because he knew the place in the solar system that no one knew about at all. AND HE WAS HOT AS HIM WITH THE SHADES!

I think he was the human, Robert. The movie explained that his wife and child had been murdered and I believe that the character that he played had a complete breakdown. I think he was the human, Robert. He found a wonderful place to come from that would protect him from the trauma of the tragedy of his wife and daughter’s brutal murder. Good on ‘im! The way he helped the other patients and the relationship he had with the doctor were great aspects of the film.

I think he was an alien. solved the universe formula and took the black girls body to k-pax because he could only take one person.

I believe he was the human, Robert. (He almost convinced me. Loved his “face”-expression in the end of the movie sitting in the wheelchair. He has the same face as Mona Lisa sometimes….)

I strongly believe he was human because he was enlisted as a student of guadalupe high school which makes him a human from earth. I think he was an alien. Because I don’t wan’t him to be a plant

in keeping with the deliberate ambiguity fostered i answer that he was both an alien and a human; was he an alien or a human ? yes and no

I think he was an alien. Prot is not a name any human parents would ever give their kid.

I think he was an alien. The way Prot knew the location of his planet. The things he would say to the other patients. The way he knew things no one else knew.

I think he was an alien. He used Robert Porter’s body to do some visiting but also to wait until he found the right person to look after Robert to, and when he found Dr. Powell, he knew he could leave Robert there with him.

I think he was the human, Robert. Prot used Roberts’s body to learn about earth and it’s people. Prot left earth in someone elses body, namely Bess.

I think he was both. I do not particularly like science fiction movies, however, when Kevin Spacey plays a character like prot/Robert I find myself drawn to the essence of [that] person.  And, the essence of that person is not a tormented human rather a decent normal alien from very far away.

I think he was the human, Robert. He had really hard problem.

I think he was an alien. he  was prote because 1 he could see ultra vilote light2 he did not respond to his medisin 3 were did bisty go? swept off to K-PAX and as soon as prote left he went cattatonic.4i think he went into his body like when he was in hipnosis he started to shiver like he was drowning besides if he was not from k-pax how did he controll what he said when in hipnosis like he rememberd being on k-pax as a child.

I think he was an alien. the girl at the end disappears, maybe prot is an entity that enters anothers body and inhabits it. I think he was the human, Robert. I believe that Robert has truely convinced himself that he was Prot and that is what got him through all of the grief he had been through.

I beleive that they were one and the same dammit!

I think he was an alien. i want to. it’s a good feeling to believe that there is more out there then this hell on earth…

I think he was an alien. There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy, Horatio…

I think he was both. How good is that there are two options to choose! I was really afraid of being made to decide. He is good as both. My husband, after having watched this movie, said: “WE are detected now!’ “Who are WE?”, I asked. And he replied: “Prot and me!” So I live with such a kind of… man? And now I know it. After 17 years…

I think he was an alien. He is absolutely incredible. Just have to be alien!

I think he was an alien. After reading the books (1,2,3) I think it concludes that he must have been an alien from K-Pax, which i like to believe.

I think he was an alien. Because of the stars.

I think he was an alien. I belive this because he Prot went to help his friend and took over his friends body to help.

I think he was an alien. and the human, Robert. Both, Prot AND Robert existed. After Robert died, Prot came to earth, using Robert’s body as his human form. At the end, Prot went back to his planet, so Robert’s body was left lifeless.

I think he was an alien. It was the spirit of a K-Paxian who took control of Robert’s body i believe. Because he was so desperate when he found he’s family dead, his friend from K-Pax (which is prot) came to help him..

I think he was an alien. To me it’s rather evident that the book and the screenplay differentiate enough, but that Prot is definitely from K-PAX. There is a location given, the location is verified by scientific proof via math.  Bess’s body is gone, while Robert’s body is left behind.  Prot could only take one person with him when he left, he took Bess and left Robert behind because Robert had a new caretaker.

I think he was an alien because all the “crazy” people said so–in all the movies I’ve seen, the “crazy” people were always right.

I think he was an alien. I believe he was from K-PAX but just saved Robert Porter.  His job was done when he knew he was safe, and so he went home to K-PAX knowing he was with someone who would take care of him.

I think he was an alien. how did he know about the stuff with the dog?

I think he was an alien. Because not only of circumstantial evidence, but because prot needs to exist.

I think he was the human, Robert. Kevin likes to play troubled souls.  I think he can relate!!

I think he was an alien because of his optimism.

I think he was alien. I concur with most of the other statements (alien, inhabiting human body, friend of porter, leaving him where he could be taken care of). But the story has some week points: true curious scientists would follow up with more questions, trying to get more information out of him when he is traveling as only energy (faster then c = without matter), how can he take Bess with him? when they get odd results on his physical test (uv-sight etc.) why don’t they follow up on them with more tests he gets pulled to earth when porter needs him (one instant he’s on k-pax, next on earth as the hypnosis-session showed), so how did he have time to schedule a trip home? the doctor is expecting to meet someone who has known porter in new mexico, so why doesn’t he just take a photo to show around? on the one hand he says, he’s on earth on his own choice (always wanted to see an underdeveloped planet), on the other hand it seems, he is called/pulled by porter and doesn’t come by his own choice.

I think he was an alien. Well unless he was a NASA scientist he couldn’t have known all the astrology stuff the film talked about and then what else would the sequel (which by the way I haven’t read yet) about?

I think he was an alien. I believe Prot is an alien and Robert Porter is really a friend. I can’t explain how they are friend, but as Prot can “use” Robert’s body, maybe Prot had used Robert’s father’s body, and so on. Because “now” he used Bess body and it is his mission on Earth and other planets.. (William K., from Brazil)

I think he was an alien. His knowledge of things in the universe that he would otherwise have had no way of knowing. And his disappearance for several days then reappearance with no explanation for how he could have exited then re-entered the grounds without detection. I think he was an alien. Undeniable biological proof.

Prot was from K-PAX because no human on this planet could be that wise or be able to sense and do what Prot could do.

I think he was an alien. It’s a happier, more intriguing and mystifying thought.

I think he was an alien. Read the trilogy and you will agree.

I think he was an alien. he was from K-pax.

I think he was an alien. there were so many reasons but what really convinced me was that with all the knowledge he had of the heavens, solar systems and such, I believe he was prot from the planet K-pax and he possesed the body of the man (human) Robert Porter. either way, Kevin is so convincing in either charachter it is easy to keep guessing.

I think he was an alien. It’s just so much more of a hopeful position on the subject.  Besides, the only one who truly knows is Prot himself, and I’d like to believe that he is real.

I think he was an alien. What would’ve happened to Bess?  I think what really happened was that prot and Bess beamed to K-PAX, and prot timed it just right so that Robert Porter would take his place, but with a Bess-like personality.

I think he was the human, Robert. Of the name Robert Porter – Prot Tess dissapeared at the end, so if her body was taken off back to K-Pax then Prot could have taken Porter. So I’m assuming Prot was Porters split personality and Tess just wandered off at the end. ~

I think prot was an alien and the human, Robert. He was Robert, that’s for sure but you could say he was reincarnated in the soul/body/spirit of Prot. He was Robert. He is Prot.  ~ p.s. (brillant Film) ~

I think prot was an alien. That’s why his doctor was looking for him through the telescope. ~

I think prot was an alien and the human, Robert. The answer could be both…… there need be no parameters. And can the author prove to me otherwise?….no he cannot. ~ JV, The Daily Mirror, London

I think prot was an alien because I am prot.

I think prot was an alien. I have read the second book and I still think that he was from K-PAX. I love to  have hope that he was from K-PAX and that even with that book I still hold on hope.

I think prot was an alien. It Makes No Sence For Him To Be Human. How Else Could He Have Known That Much About Space? I Mean Common Really. He Drew A Map Of Space(Which Was Sooo Hott).

I think prot was an alien and the human, Robert. I belive prot was from K-PAX, because of the uv light that he can see.  Also he was able to draw the orbit of the planet, and nobody was supposed to know about that part of the sky.

I think prot was the human, Robert. he pretend to be another person after those terrible murders of he´s family.

I think prot was an alien. He was described as a light being, who travelled in a beam of light, and left in a flash of light.

I think prot was an alien. how else would he know the intricacies of k-pax’s orbit?  he was a wiz in astrophysics!  impossible for a human working in a slaughterhouse.  he had healing powers… he disappearing to go “up north!”  he is 100% ALIEN!

I think prot was an alien and the human, Robert. beleive Prot “borrowed” Robert’s body. Robert, wasn’t really using it anyway. Prot just harmlessly wanted to experience Earthly things. Read the sequals to the first novel!

I think prot was the human, Robert. is really confusing if Prot was really from K-PAX why he answered as Robert Porter and why he became so upset when the doctor was hipnotizying him? but in the other hand if he was Robert Porter how did he take that girl to nowhere or to K-PAX? I think prot was an alien. I believe he really was from K-pax but was inhabiting the human body of a man named robert. see you in Kevin Heaven

I think prot was an alien. I believe in the ….possibility.

I dont have a clue.. If he was a human its too simple.

I think prot was an alien:

-bess missing -sensitivity to uv, knowledge of a planets location, orbital path w/o access to sophisticated instruments -frequent escapades from the institution -ability to talk to animals -profound and objective knowledge of human emotions which can never be achieved by some one from a remote village -aware of roberts existence -also that he appeared out of thin air at the station

I think prot was an alien. When you are hypnotised you tell the truth… He said that he was a K-Paxian and stuff… No normal people can talk to dogs.. lol

I think prot was an alien. because  prot knew so much about the planents and about the two suns and also knew what that dog was trying to say to his owners. so how would a human being know that?

I think prot was an alien. And I think that Dr. Powell thinks so too and that’s why he’s looking up into the night sky. I think he’s waiting for prot to return.

I think prot was an alien. That smile at the end when Dr. Powell is pushing “Robert” in the wheelchair.  He looked like “I know something you don’t know!”.

I think prot was an alien.A couple of reasons. First prot saying “Now that you’ve found Robert, take good care of him.”  and the note beside his sunglasses at the end of the movie ~ “Back soon. Don’t touch.”

I think prot was the human, Robert. Well because, that would mean I would be able to have human babies with him. 🙂

I think prot was an alien. I actually don’t know. Maybe he was schizophrenic?

I couldn’t decide. If prot is Robert Porter, where is Bess? If prot was from the planet K-PAX how did he take Bess with him? Prot’s room was being watched and if he needed a beam of light to travel, how did the beam of light get Bess? How could she have made it past the guards into prot’s room?

I think prot was the human, Robert. After I saw the movie, I interpreted prot to be both human and alien; human (as Robert) and alien (as prot). But after reading the book, I got a better sense of what was really going on inside Robert, and of where prot came from, so I believe that prot was really just a figment of Robert’s imagination 🙂 (Did that make any sense?)

I think prot was the human, Robert. It won’t be popular, this answer, and it probably isn’t even true, if the book has a sequal.  But I believe prot was human.  He acted exactly like he had post traumatic stress disorder in the hypnosis scene.  I happen to have the same problem.  It really messes you up.  Besides, a real alien would never dress like that. I think prot was an alien. Didn’t read the sequel so no spoiler trouble here.  I think prot was from K-PAX simply because no dillusional could be on his own for so long without getting noticed.

I think prot was the human, Robert. He was unable to cope with not going to K-PAX and was catatonic for that reason. Dr. Powell could have been in his yard looking up at the stars just to show him being reflective on what he’d learned from prot/Robert. It didn’t have to mean he was searching the stars for prot. And Bess could have escaped when everyone else was running into prot’s room.

I think prot was an alien. I think that Robert Porter made a connection with Prot, at a very young age. I don’t know how, and I’m hoping that the subsequent novels will clear that up for me. I think that Prot came to Robert when he needed him.  Some might call this an alternative personality. Gives one a lot to think about.

I think prot was an alien. Because.

I think prot was an alien. I think prot was the human, Robert. i am from KPAX aswell! (and kevin can get his own beam of light, cuz this one is spoken for!)

I think prot was an alien. Prot is definitely an alien.  Based on his description under hypnosis of Robert’s fight against the current in the river and later when he tell the Doctor ” Now that you’ve found Robert, take good care of him” I believe that Prot entered Roberts body trying to save his life and then proceeded to live in it in order to take care of him.

I think prot was the human, Robert.Issues related to Robert Porter made PROT edgy.  Also, PROT became very agitated during hypnosis b/c what happend to him, Robert Porter was so hard for him to bear that he became PROT.

I think prot was an alien. Actually I think prot was both.  While visiting Earth for five years to make his report he used Robert Porters body just as he was walking into the river to die.  Then prot completes his assignment and goes back to K-PAX leaving Robert there in the place where he most needed to be, where he could get help.

I think prot was an alien. I believe that Robert was traumatized and Prot came and helped him when he needed it, and then, he needed it. I believe that Prot was really from K-PAX, and I believe that Robert when through some sad stuff.

I think he was both. prot was Roberts friend and when Robert’s life was tradgically changed, prot took it apon his self to save his good friend. He got his friend some help. took him to a place where he knew Robert would be ok. All i know is that Prot and Robert were played wonderfully by kevin…even know Robert had very few lines!! 😛

?? Prot was a beam of light using Robert’s body….bless…..

I think prot was an alien.. mainly, that prot was able to see light in the 300 angstoms, and because of his supposed ‘savant’ talent for ‘star-charting’.  I found it hard to accept that this being was only a delusional man with a terrible past. I think prot was an alien. I think that K-Paxians visit other planets by taking over a being from that planet (a host body).  So Prot was Prot but also Robert Porter.  Whenever Robert needed Prot, Prot would come inside of Robert.  It was because Prot was inside Robert that he didn’t drown.  Prot kept Robert alive and when Prot had to go back to K-Pax, what was left was the real Robert without Prot’s help.  That’s why Robert was comatose after Prot left his body … that was how Robert really was after his wife and child were murdered.  (I haven’t read the second book and if I’m right, it’s just a good guess.)

I think prot was an alien. The character was quite convincing.  And to further argue my point, I think that he was a K-PAX-ian in a human body, kinda like Quantum Leap.  It was as if Robert were just a shell.  Think about it…   He wasn’t much after Prot leaped back to K-PAX on the beam of light at the end.  Thats just my theory.

I think prot was an alien.Prot was from K-PAX, Robert was from New Mexico.  Thats all there is to it!

I think prot was an alien. Prot would not become catatonic!  Here’s what happened- Prot beamed off back to K-PAX and Robert Porter was left behind, a lump of mental insanity.  This is so obvious from the book (not as good as the movie because Kevin’s not in it, but good anyway).

I think prot was an alien. a human couldn’t woof down a ‘nanner like that!!! 🙂

I think prot was the human, Robert. well, after being on the K-PAX site forever, I’ve been on this site like an addict. Anyways, the hypnosis sessions led me to believe he was Robert b/c he just didn’t want to remember the trauma. Although that occured to me after seeing the movie 3 times!

I think prot was an alien. It was kinda like a spirit taking over someone’s body.  Like, when Prot is being hypnotized, and he’s talking about his friend “Peter” (Is that what the doc. decided to call him? I can’t remember)  He wasn’t lying.  He would come to Earth and visit his friend and he took over when Robert tried to kill himself.  Eh….did anyone get that??  I’m not sure I did, either….hm….it’s ’cause I’m asian, isn’t it?  😉

I believe that he is prot from K-PAX and was friends with Robert.  When Robert decided to kill himself he took Robert’s identity(or look) so that he could look like a human who isn’t on Earth alive.

I think prot was an alien and I think prot was the human, Robert. I think Prot an alien inhabiting the body of Robert Porter.  I think when he went back to K-Pax he went using Bess’s  body and leaving Robert’s behind. (He could only take “one” person with him).

I think prot was an alien. Prot was too intelligent and too compassionate to be a real earthling.

I think prot was an alien. How could any human not educated in astrology know all that stuff about the stars & planets. Loved the movie by the way!

I think prot was an alien. Why not?

I think Prot/Robert had multiple personalities. These are obviously just some more of Kevin’s personalities.

I think prot was an alien. Where did the girl disappear to??????

I think prot was an alien. He knew too much about the planet he was from in galaxies few knew little about.  Now, I have to go read the book to find out.  In any case, don’t we really want him to a K-Paxian after all?  That’s what makes the role so uplifting, to dream of the possibilities in life.

I think prot was an alien. How could he know that much about K-pax if he was some hobo?

I think prot was an alien. its quite simple. If you weigh both sides of the coin one can be explained and the other not. for alien- the black woman who left with prot was never found. The map of k-pax prot drew was accurate and cant be explained. His 3 day trip up north cant be explained. for human- he knew a man called robert porter, whom he met when he was only a child. Through time they became friends, and when robert tried to drown himself prot saved him, ableit robert becoming a mute. Prot took his form and continued his fact finding mission. Example- “now that you’ve found robert porter, look after him” after he beamed out he beamed the real robert porter in. The pencil he wrote with was from the salvation army, maybe where he placed him.

I think prot was the human, Robert. He had multiple personalities. Oh, and he’s drop dead-sexy 🙂 I think prot was an alien. Prot was just borrowing Robert’s body when he came to visit earth.  Robert was a real person and Prot was really an alien.

I think prot was an alien. Because no one could be that delusional and messed up for so long without raising suspicion along the way.  If he were human, they’d have had him locked away a lot earlier.

I think prot was an alien. Humans cannot see ultra-violet light. Humans cannot simply disappear simply without a trace and then appear again whenever they choose. Prot was from K-Pax. His friend, Robert Porter, was connected to him in some way, and he called him for help that July day. Prot knew he couldn’t help him, he said so himself, and so he didn’t try. He came to help Mark instead. He inhabited Robert’s body for five years, and when he left, Robert’s body was in the same condition it was in before Prot was in it; catatonic.

I think prot was an alien. There’s no way he could have figured out the complex calculations governing the orbit of K-pax since no one on Earth had yet figured it out.  Unless, of course, he IS from k-pax.

I think prot was an alien: 1)the light 2)the dog 3)vanishing from the ward, without anyone seeing him, or noticing. 4)alien language 5)high knowledge on the solar system 6)eating produce with peels etc. 7)high knowledge in curing mental patients. 8)possibilty- if he has high sensitivity to light, he could of had same with the sprinkler, and the noise was extravagant. I think prot was an alien. prot was the light within robert…..he appeared on and off throughout his life and may share some of his memories….he took over his body after he died to finish his “report”. – time is not the same to k-paxians as we recognise it here on earth and it is perfectly logical for prot to flit in and out of robert’s life as he wishes….

I think he’s both.  He’s Robert but his mind was occupied by prot the K-PAXian.

I think prot was an alien. prot was from k-pax, robert is human

I think prot was an alien. Prot’s knowledge beyond known science, drug immunity…etc.

I think prot was an alien. Prot does things that are consistently unexplainable such as vanishing to Greenland or taking Bess away with him.  Even the most convincing evidence that Prot was really a human fall short because they don’t rule out his “body” was an alien.  Since MASS can’t travel at the speed of light, perhaps “PROT” is only a being of energy inhabiting a dead man’s body who has some type of post-death recall.

I think prot was an alien. This is what i think, i have only seen the movie once but i liked it a lot and am probably going to buy it. Prot was a K-PAXian he travels through light and i think he borrowed Robert’s body once he died (remember he tried to kill him self) to help his from live on. i think on different planets Prot is a different shape and doesn’t travel in the body. that is my opinion. P.S. Kevin Spacey is a brilliant actor and i respect him for everything he has done.

I think prot was an alien.  Bess is gone, why would he choose a coma state of life if he was really Robert Porter, and his knowledge about things no one knew.

I think prot was an alien. i just do

I think prot was an alien. He was borrowing Robert’s body but when he had to go home to K-PAX, Robert wanted to stay on Earth so Prot left him here. He wouldn’t need a  body if he can travel on beams of light.

I think prot was an alien. I have faith.

I think prot was an alien. I think prot was an alien who was using Robert’s body to get around on Earth (“why is a soap bubble round?” theory).  So prot had all of Robert’s memories because Robert’s brain was still in his body.  When prot went back to K-PAX, Robert became catatonic again.  Prot kept saying that he could only take one person back to K-PAX.  This probably means that he could only use one person’s body for his next trip.  So maybe he would return to Earth as Bess next time.

I think prot was an alien. Just look at the guy!!

I believe Kevin’s character was both Robert and Prot. Prot was able to prove where he was from. Robert’s life proved that he was also Prot. Prot was like a shell for Robert. He became Prot I think. Basically I believe Kevin’s character was two people in one (cute) body.

I think prot was an alien. prot is from k-pax, sensitive to light, too smart, talks to dogs

I think prot was an alien. I believe he was an alien (although I do believe the movie was left so that people could come to their own conclusions) because he could see the ultraviolet spectrum.  This and the other obvious hints make it hint that he was an alien even though there was doubt.  For instance, he knew way more than some of the best minds on earth about his star system, as well as mathamatics, and astronomy for some “country bumpkin”.  Also, in the DVD edition, there is an alternate ending in which Jeff Bridges is looking into space at night with his telescope.  I think that they changed the ending because it would give the audience the impression that he was an alien because this ending implies that Bridges character also believed him to be.  The ending they chose was a bit more ambiguous and open-ended which was good because the viewer could come to their own conclusions rather than being told them.

I think prot was an alien. You cant really give anything away from reading the 2 book cause it confuses you more and doesnt answer any questions you might have, its worth reading though cause it prepares you for the 3 one, havent read that yet cause it comes to the U.S. in a year or something, but i would like for him to be a alien, but read the others too!!  -Ashley

I think prot was an alien. Because I saw the movie and that is what happened.

I think prot was an alien. I don’t know maybe because since I realy think hes Human then I may be wrong. So thats What i think.

I think prot was an alien. Bess was gone when Prot left to return to K-PAX. Therefore its kind of obvious she left woth him. Plus they could’nt find her in any half-way houses or churches, etc. I think he was both. i’ve just saw the movie one month ago and after some reflexion i really think that prot is from k-pax and robert is from Earth . I think prot is kind of a entitie who takes a body and control it . So , if this is not true , there are bigs incoherences in the movie well , if anyone have read the books , please tell me the truth at newmarks@voila.fr , i really want to know . excuse my poooooor english , but i hope you will understand me 🙂 I think prot was an alien. Prot was a guest of Roberts body and had been since he pulled robert to kapax from that river five years earlier. If this was a clean screenplay (nothing thrown in just for the hell of it) then all signes point directly to this. he wanted to place robert in propper care (“Now that you found Robert, take good care of him”) Prot knew that he would be leaving his host behind opening up an opportunity for one lucky crazy to go back to k-pax with him. There is so much more, I’m sure these are not unique thoughts to those of you who believe. ~ Peawall

No opinion, just a mysterious message: I believe prot is coming back from K-PAX to get me!

I think prot was the human, Robert. He had a memory of swinging his girl on the swing and of the sprinkler being a bad thing.  Could go either way, but the movie has more depth and meaning to me if he’s the human, Robert.I think prot was an alien. In order for Prot to have simply been a deluded human, he must have also been one who can see the infrared spectrum, impress a gaggle of astrophysicists, and to top it off, Bess would have had to escape the mental ward.  These seem like three pretty big coincidences when the rest of the movie waffles back and forth between the two explanations (deluded vs. alien).

I think prot was an alien. I actually believe he was both — meaning he was like a twin from K-Pax, a duel entity if you will.

I think prot was an alien. Some of the reasons:  Because he was physically not a human, and because we saw light come into the room before he disappeared.  And because he knew too much about K-PAX and astounded the astronomists. I think prot was an alien – ultra violet light, bess missing, appearing from nowhere in beginning, explanation of his solar system.

I think prot was an alien. The increased infrared spectrum sensibilities, the intimate knowledge of a solar system known to an extreme few astrophysicists, and the incredible insight into everyone’s lives.

I think prot was an alien.Otherwise how could he have known about the coming of the blue bird of happiness?- or eaten a banana whole, i tried it  and it was no barrel of monkeys, … or maybe prot is human and K-evin is from K-PAX? (scary twillight zone music begins – you know, my cousin randall in arizona got high one time, and he started eating, like, really weird foods and spaceyed out, twillight zone kinda)

I think prot was an alien. I’ve met a lot of weirdos in my time, but none as ‘balanced’ as Prot.  If you spend more than two minutes in their (tormented humans) company, something about their body language or speech will tell you they’re not ‘normal’.

I think prot was the human, Robert. I’M SKEPTIC BY NATURE.

I think prot was an alien. Bess disappeared when he left, He was able to see ultraviolet light, He wrote with wierd characters in an alien language.

I think prot was the human, Robert. I absolutely refuse to believe in aliens!

I think prot was an alien. prot and Robert are two different beings. Robert been through so much. So when he was little, prot came to him and became his friend. When Robert was scared or sad prot took his place and protected him. Robert was hideing deep inside of prot. After the death of his wife and daughter, Robert tried to drowned himself in a river. He survived and prot came to protect him. But in 5 years prot had to return to K-PAX. He would come back to protect Robert soon. Still Robert was frightned and became a catonic. Though they have no families on K-PAX I think Prot truly loved Robert and despite the ways of the K-PAXians they were true friends.

I think prot was an alien. prot came to Robert when he was a only little boy, after his daddy died. Robert had alot of hard times before and after that and prot was there to protect him. Robert would hide deep inside of prot. Like prot, Robert was so gentle and loving, but when he lost his wife and little girl, Robert felt worthless because he wasn’t there to protect them and also because he could kill. Robert was alot like Jesus he didn’t believe in an eye for an eye or life for a life. After he survived the river. Prot came to protect him. Robert was so frightened and scared. Despite the ways of the K-PAXians prot loved and cared for Robert. He wouldn’t let go until Robert was safe and sound. But soon he would have to go to K-PAX. prot found someone to take good care of Robert. That was Mark. I think Mark knew. He still looks up toward the constellation Lyra and he wonders…

I think prot was an alien. I believe he was from KPax, but could only be seen if he inhabited a human’s body. Not just ANY, but only 1 that was going thru a tragedy & couldn’t get thru it. W/out Prot  the human couldn’t get the help that  he/she needed

I think prot was an alien. He arrived without glasses meaning he came to earth with them off (at the end of the film), and put them on in the airport when he left. I came to this assumption because he said that speeds of tachyon were reversal of time.

I think prot was the human, Robert. I think he was human because of the hypnosis scenes.

I think prot was an alien. I think Kevin is from another planet too…

I think prot was an alien. Prot is very different then Robert, though i would love to meet either robert porter or prot the book(s) touch me in a way that no other book could prot and robert sound like great beings and i think that robert was just trying to protect his family and should not have felt so bad . – Fellow reader of K-PAX and on a beam of light (and hoper to meet them) – Sammi Grzegorczyk

I think prot was an alien. Bess was gone.

I think prot was an alien. The spirit of Prot took over Robert’s tormented body!

I think prot was an alien. Prot was definitely an alien. Although on the surface it is easy to deduce that Prot was actually Robert Porter, there  are several points that cannot be explained away. First, Prot could see UV light. Second, although Robert Porter may have been called “very bright” by the sheriff, he could not have had such detailed knowledge of Prot’s solar system. I think prot was an alien. Prot could see ultra-violet light, insensitive to medication, disapeared for 3 days at will, understood solar systems only merely part discovered, spoke to the dog and understood it, was the bluebird, appeared from nowhere, these arent things a normal but deranged human could ever do/be. I think prot was an alien. I have SEEN the film !! doh – how may humans do you know who can see ultraviolet and talk with dogs ? etc etc etc

I think prot was an alien. After all, that Dog never liked anybody!

I think prot was the human, Robert. Because earlier in the movie he said it took him 7 years to get to Earth. The year was 1996, so actually he should have arrived in 2003. He also said he comes whenever he was needed, now how wanted can you be if you take 7 years to come? I still wonder what happened to Bess.

I think prot was the human, Robert. at the end of the film when “prot” was meant to leave by this beam of light he in fact ended up shaking under the bed and went insane instead! does get u thinkin though! p.s kevin spacey still looking fine in his old age!

I think prot was the human, Robert. Prot was human and Bess must be clinging on to the window ledge outside but cant speak as usual so she’s stuck there. how else would she get out of that place?

I think prot was the human, Robert. After reading the first book, it pretty much explains he is Robert Porter, however, after reading On a Beam of Light, there is a little more reason to believe he is really Prot.  But I’ll stick with him being Robert Porter et al. ~ Scullee1

I think prot was an alien. He knew things that humans could not know.

I think prot was an alien. Because he could see ultraviolet light and how could he just disappear for a few days when he went to Iceland..

I think prot was an alien. this is a blade runner cliff hanger all over again…we’ll find out in 20 years when the ultra-mega-super-hyper DVD (or whatever the current media is) box set comes out 😉

I think prot was an alien. I just think it makes perfect sense, I mean didn’t any one see that wisp of a smile on poor Robert’s face at the end as he is in the wheel chair.  Who can possibly doubt that he took Bess and went back to K-PAX

I think prot was the human, Robert. Have you ever heard of “Ockham’s Razor”?

I think prot was the human, Robert. If Prot was an alien why didn’t he take Robert back with him to K-PAX to help him in stead of hanging about in his body for 5 years and then leaving him behind. I think prot was an alien. prot was just using robert as a kind of suit, while the mind of prot was inside, and his extraordinary knowledge and the dissapearance of the girl from the ward convince me to believe that prot is actually from k-pax

I think prot was the human, Robert. This silly part is using the disappearance of Bess as support that Prot was alien.  Prot left behind Robert’s body but took all of Bess?  It makes no sense.  If Prot needs to take his entire body to visit NewFoundland then why can’t he take Robert’s Body when going to K-Pax?  You forget that Robert/Prot appeared out of “nowhere” in the train station.  If Prot is Robert possessed, then he still would have to walk to get to the train station. Point is, no matter which way you slice it, it is still baloney.  Neither conclusion is consistent with the facts.  So, why not go out and get some fresh air and enjoy life?

I think prot was an alien. How else would he know all that stuff about the stars and Lyra?? And where did Bess go?? She went somewhere.  There was too much magic there…I believe he is otherworldly.

I think prot was an alien. there is no way that a simple”knocker” could have known about the rotation of K-PAX, which was preiously unknown to scientists. Moreover, when Prot first appeared in the train station, less than 2 seconds elapsed from the time the panhandler in the wheelchair turned to thank the man for giving him some coins from the time he turned back around and saw Prot standing there.

I think prot was an alien. He did not take his report with him when he supposedly returned to K-PAX.  He spent so much time compiling information from it due to his people’s custom of keeping reports.  Then he returned without it.

I believe both. I think Robert became his imaginary friend Prot. When Prot went back to K-PAX, it was like Prot was leaving Robert’s body. Robert then became whatever it was Dr. Powell diagnosed him as (I can’t remember). But the whole time Robert knew what was going on (remember that smile at the end). Prot was real – where did Bess go? Why was Prot able to detect UV light? Because he was an alien from K-PAX. Where was Robert’s “drowned” body? The answer is nowhere because he didn’t die, he became Prot for those few years, living in a way in which he always wanted to (as his imaginary friend Prot), actually becoming that which he yearned for – an escape from the death of his family.

I think prot was an alien. cause he is 3l337 I think prot was an alien. According to the scientist nobody knew any information about the star rotation of the system.

I think prot was an alien. Kevin made me believe ….

I think prot was an alien. The character is obviously from K-PAX and is legitamate because the character, Prot, is not the only one effected by his claims. In the end of the movie Bess disappears without a trace… presumably to K-PAX since she has expressed the desire to go. This brings me to my most important point about why I feel that Prot was truly from K-PAX. My theory is this; the body is only a shell, and in this movie that idea is being conveyed subtly in most every way. Prot was inhabiting Robert’s body and when Prot left to return to K-PAX he left behind Robert’s body and took Bess’s. And so Prot as an individual spirit held all of the knowledge he held about astronomy and K-PAX. Every so often our friend, Robert, the natural inhabitant of the body peeked out… such as in the scenes where he is hyponotized and speaks of his life. The moments in which he speaks as Prot and as Robert are differentiated clearly as a battle between the spirits to live within the shell. In the end we see Prot leave, and even the psychiatric patients are able to say “That’s not Prot… who is that?” because they know that the shell has once again been left to Robert… the emotionally tormented man who lent his body to an alien spirit.

I think prot was an alien. Robert is not, as the other patients also realize, Prot.

I think prot was an alien. Is it a true story? (I don’t think so.) I think prot was an alien. A mentally delusional patient would not bother to ‘hide’ to convince others in the institution he was visiting Newfoundland for a few days . If he truly believed he was Prot then he would simply relocate on a beam of light…which he appeared to do. One doesn’t try to consciously fabricate an illusion to perpetuate it if one truly believes it. As his body did seem to disappear for several days I would assume he is therefore Prot from KPAX and not human.

I think prot was an alien. I think he used Robert’s body as a host for his time here on earth, so that he would blend in physically with us. I think prot was an alien. He’s an angel.

I think prot was an alien. I believe Prot is actually an angel, due to the use of light in the film. I think that he was Robert’s guardian angel and that at certain times in Robert’s life, when he was upset, he’d call for Prot, such as when his father died. I also think that he needs a physical body to use as a host, which is why he took Bess with him. I think prot was the human, Robert. I like to be different ^_^ I think prot was an alien. b/c it’s a nicer story that way.

I think prot was an alien. I’m back! Marco……… (Well .. great!)

I think prot was an alien. Its what we all wanted to believe. If only i could have gone with him in that beam of light.

I think prot was an alien because I want to.

I think prot was an alien because he knows things he couldn’t know and because he sees the world from a unique perspective.

I think prot was an alien because he is resisitent do high doses of drugs, he sees light waves humans can’t and he disappeared from a cell with someone else. easy I think prot was the human, Robert. I like to see Prot emotional and fragile like only a human being can be.

I think prot was an alien. definitely an alien, what happen to bess?prot uses human bodies of people whom will never be missed because they have no family.both human’s families were killed!!!

I think prot was an alien. cos i do i believe he can be anyone he desired but he choose prot  but pretty soon he’ll want to be robert so i believe he is a human

I think prot was an alien and I think prot was the human, Robert.

I think prot was an alien and I think prot was the human, Robert. I think that Prot channelled himself through Robert, and that when he was there he shared existence with him. That was why he had Robert’s memeries but he had total control when Robert was in a brainstew. The proof is in what he knew about K-pax’s solar system.

I think prot was an alien. I think Prot was from K-PAX and took over Robert’s body at the time he went into the river and discarded the body when he went back to K-PAX 5 years later. It would seem like a classic case of the trauma victim (Robert) creating a new identity to cope with the trauma except that Prot had the knowledge of the solar system that K-PAX was located in, which (according to the movie) he couldnt have possibly had. So, I think that the entity Prot was an alien.

I think prot was an alien. I believe that Prot inhabited the body of Robert, and that is why he looked like a human.  How could he have known all he did about the astronomy that only 2 or 3 top astronomers were aware of = certainly not something that he was taught by his father 30 years before.

I think prot was an alien. OBVIOUS I think prot was an alien. he was way to knowledgable

I think prot was the human, Robert. Prot is human, Prot is Robert.  He is a very clever man who created this whole new world and person as it is the only way he can live with the pain of what he had been through. When he becomes Robert again at the end this is why we see a broken, depressed man. He explains his knowledge of the ‘stars’ when he is describes his earliest childhood memory when he is first hypnotised….his dad taught him.

I think prot was an alien and I think prot was the human, Robert.

I think prot was an alien. He left at the end and took that girl who couldn’t speak with him.  Robert was unable to communicate entirely.

I think prot was an alien. i have not read the book but i think yes he was an alien from seing the film

I think prot was an alien. he must have been , where did the patient go , prot could take only one person with him ??

I think prot was the human, Robert. He was just a very intellent man and since there aren’t many of those everyone just said he was an alien!

I think prot was an alien. Too many extraterrestrial quirks about his character that wouldn’t occur in a normal human.

I think prot was an alien. Prot´s DNA Example is quite different from the Robert Porter.

I think prot was an alien. Humans can’t see ultraviolet light, and that is the moment we can be sure Prot was an alien (or what ever you want to relate it to). The rest is up to us, how will we explain everything that happened.

I think prot was an alien. he knew how the objects in the  kpax solar system orbited i just think that kpaxians can assume somsones body, dead or alive first robert porter, and then bess. i think the reason he said under hypnosis things that would suggest he was really robert porter  was due to robert porters traumatic experience with his familys murder. and when PROT assumed robert porters body, he also assumed some of his subconciousness.

I think prot was an alien. how could he know the information on the kpax star system if he wasnt an alien.

I think prot was an alien. he just simply jumped into the girls body and left on his beam of light.. hence leaving robert under the bed.. and the girl gone..

I think prot was an alien. remember when he spoke to the dog and told the kids not to hide his favorite sneaker anymore…..how would he know about something like that, but why wasn’t it brought up in the movie….beside the little girl saying”no way”. why did that TV screen watching Prot’s room go snowy … how did he go up north and leave the hospital like that…. he took over Roberts body for 4.9 years, brought him to the hospital when he knew he would be leaving  back to his planet so Robert could get help.

A mixture of the two: You’ll see when u read the rest.

I think, but I`m not sure, he was a God. Because Prot said that he called him. And Robert, when he killed that man, said: Oh, God… so I think he was a God. But I can be wrong. If he wasn`t God, I`m sure he was from K-PAX. I think prot was an alien. I think when Prot came to earth he needed to take form of a human, that human being robert porter, obviously why he came up with all the horrific memorys once under hypnosis. How else would of Prot known about ‘K-PAX’ and how could he detect ultra violet?

because i think he took over the body of robert  and just used the body to move around a bitlike body snacthes  his friend robert died in the lake i think and prot took over as robert died

Page for votes that talk about the book. Don’t read any farther if you don’t want to read anything about the books.
